What you call yourself matters. And as personal trainers, we can't be solely concerned with the actual 'training' our clients do. Client goals are multifaceted (even when our clients think all they're doing is trying to lose weight!), and our methods for meeting those client goals are multifaceted as well. We are part trainer, part coach, and part "designer," as Dick Talens calls it, and we have to help clients with not just exercise but with habit change, self-image, and appropriate goal-setting. It's not about simply telling a client what to do; it's about juggling our roles as needed, and only one of those roles is "trainer."
