The Nocebo Effect: How Your Power of Suggestion May Harm Your Clients -- Matthew Danzinger, Jonathan Fass, thePTDC

Teachers already know this: in classrooms where the expectations are high, students rise to the occasion. When expectations are low, performance is low. Often, the way we speak to our clients becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy; positive language breeds confidence and empowerment, while negative language -- whether it's about a client's form, potential, nutrition, or motivation -- begets pain, lack of results, or less-than-stellar commitment. This doesn't mean we need to be cloyingly chipper or overwhelmingly perky with clients; instead, as Jonathan Fass and Matthew Danziger explain this week, we "must abandon the language of defects and dysfunctions" and recognize the immense power of suggestion in our words.
