You wouldn’t ask a client who was new to bench pressing to attempt a one rep max. And you wouldn’t ask a client who was unconditioned to start running 6 miles a day.
When it comes to programming for our clients, we know that we have to meet clients where they are. If a client has never lifted weights, or if a client has been sedentary for years, we know we need to start slowly, build up strength and confidence, and then ramp up programming when that client is ready.
So why do we expect our clients to instantly go from nutritional zeros to clean-eating heroes?
This week, Nia Shanks uses the recent kerfuffle over the teacher who lost weight while eating nothing but food from McDonald’s to make the point that we need to stop expecting clients to transform their eating habits overnight. Instead, we need to work with them and meet them where they are — just as we would with their training.
