The hard and fast rules of lifting form are there for obvious reasons -- protecting ourselves from injury and ensuring proper muscle activation ought to be underlying all of our training goals, whether we're shooting for hypertrophy, strength, or fat loss.

It's useful, however, to question the rules in order to develop our understanding of how the musculoskeletal system works, and this week, Zach Long has been bold enough to question the role of knee valgus in elite weight lifting. While he's careful to note that knee valgus is not a desirable movement in the overwhelming majority of trainees, Zach considers whether the presence of knee valgus in elite athletes might serve a purpose or have a logical explanation at maximal loads. His questions, while perhaps not applicable to the movement patterns we see in everyday clients, are helpful nonetheless as we strive to better understand the human body and its movement patterns.
