I want to help you be free so that you can leave a positive imprint on the World, not so you can sip Mai Tai's on the beach.
Freedom is not being able to afford a fancy car.
It’s not bullshit like being able to take 4 weeks of vacation as opposed to two because you’ve put up with enough to earn it. It’s not being able to afford a separate dish to serve dip when a bowl would do just fine.
I want to talk to you about freedom and how it leads to happiness.
Freedom means something different to everybody. For me, it provides me with the opportunity to fail. It provides me with the opportunity to tackle a big project without immediate payoffs. It means that I can explore whatever I find interesting, productive, and meaningful at any point in time.
For you it might mean that you can travel, or spend time with family, or go on more dates.
I want to help you be free so that you can leave a positive imprint on the World, not so you can sip Mai Tai’s on the beach.
There’s no short cut to a six-figure income the same way as there’s no six-pack shortcut. It takes hard work. It takes a burning desire. Most of all, it takes guts.
On your journey there will be resistance. You may outgrow friends. Your family may think that you’re cookoo””this is fine. This is good.
You will get haters and they will become more boisterous, obnoxious, and senseless over time. This is good. As Aldous Huxley once said:
“To avoid criticism do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.”
The biggest regret of the dying is that they wished that they didn’t work so hard. It’s not that they didn’t buy a bigger house, or make more money, or work their assess off every day for the opportunity to work a bit harder for a bit more money with a few more clients.
While I could preach to you, I want to help you by making it as simple as possible. It would be nice to say that we can all be hippies living off of the land this isn’t possible. We all need a basic amount of money each month to survive.
If you want the opportunity to tackle your dream big project, be with your family, or take a big risk on a crazy idea then you need to be comfortable being free because when you’re free, your mind can relax. That, my friends, is when the magic happens. It’s when you innovate. It’s when you create art. It’s when you wake up each morning with a smile so big your jaw hurts.
To do this, you need to reach your freedom number.
The freedom number is the amount of dollars per month that you need to fulfill your basic needs: Rent, food, funds to care for others (if applicable) and a small amount for extravagance (which I call my “do something special for my beautiful girlfriend fund).
Here’s my freedom number breakdown
Rent = $1,900/month.
Food = $500/month
Extravagance = $200/month
My freedom number is $2,600. It’s low because I don’t have any dependents. Yours may be higher and that’s fine — just figure it out.
So how can the Freedom Number change your life?
Now you have a goal and a safety factor.
If you really want to make this important change, you need to focus your efforts. Figure out how much money that you need per month to live and how many clients training in-person it takes to achieve that.
Whether it’s online training so that you can have a more efficient business and make more money or you want to spend more time with your family, figure out your freedom number and use it as a guide.
Once you figure it out you can work backwards. How much do you make per hour? How many client hours will it take per month for you to be free to spend time building your dream business?
After establishing the number of clients that you need, follow my Block System for trimming and organizing your schedule by prioritizing clients and times. Using this system I doubled my income while working 20 less client hours per month.
This could be the start of something beautiful.
After my mentor passed along this concept to me, I had a lot of success in a relatively short period of time. With no business experience I went from being a 25-year-old overworked and overstressed personal trainer to somebody with 2 thriving online businesses (including the PTDC).
I’m writing this to you from an island called Koh Phangan in Thailand. Don’t get me wrong, I work hard, but I do it on my own terms and have the amazing opportunity to be proactive in building my business as opposed to being reactive.
I remember the days when I’d worry that a client might cancel every time that I’d get a text message or that I had to be in bed early because I had a client in the morning.
I mentioned that freedom to me is providing myself the opportunity to fail and yes, I’ve had a lot of failures. In fact, I’ve failed many, many more times than I’ve succeeded.
But my greatest business attribute is not the ability to launch an idea based on nothing more than intuition. It’s that I’m able to figure out when something isn’t working and shut it down sometimes at a large financial loss and always at a large time loss.
I’ve learned more from failing than succeeding and none of it would have happened if I hadn’t discovered my freedom number.
Knowing that all that I need is $2,600 has given me the comfort to explore whatever I find interesting, productive, and useful at that point in time.
If you’re like most than you become paralyzed by over-analysis. The key to success is ardent focus on doing a few things thousands of times, not doing a thousand things a few times. In order to figure out what those few are, you need focus.
Without a clear goal of what you need in order to survive, you cannot focus and build a plan to reach that number before moving forward and living your dream life.
If you’re constantly worried about paying your bills or buying excess shit that you don’t need to keep up with the joneses then your mind isn’t free. And it’s only when your mind is free that creativity can take over.
Life is about happiness and fulfillment. It’s not about working hard so that you can afford more shit that some savvy marketer has made you think that you need.
Because of my mentor I was able to find my freedom number. It allowed me to fail, innovate, fail, hustle, innovate, fail, and create my legacy.
What will you do when you find yours?
