Our Choice for the Article of the Week

If you’ve read Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, you might recall his effort to eat from what he distinguished as 3 separate food chains: industrial, pastoral, and hunter/gatherer. The pastoral food chain led Pollan to the point of slaughtering his own chicken, forcing him to reconcile this act of slaughter with his desire to honor the life of that chicken. Nick English takes on a similar problem in “I Was a Vegetarian for Five Years and Today I Slaughtered a Chicken,” leading him to a new understanding of how eating fits into our sense of beauty in the world.  So often in fitness, we talk about food in such clinical terms that it’s easy to forget what Nick English learns here — that eating is “intimate” and that “our souls are made from our food.”
